According to an article in the Lakewood Sentinel, entitled The Waiting Game, printed August 16,2007 "there are nearly 4000 people in Colorado with developmental or mental disabilities". Those on these waiting lists can wait up to ten years for services. Although Colorado ranks 46th in the nation in terms of funding for services, it is among the top 10 states in terms of quality care for its residents with disabilities.

At this time, money is distributed to different locations and each has its own waiting list. Now, however, the state is considering one state wide list. This would mean that if a slot became open on the eastern slope of Colorado and the person at the top of the waiting list was from the western slope, that person would have to move away from family and friends, to get the needed services. Or they would give up their slot and wait maybe another ten years.
